why do it?
Every year, there's a new tragic story where something goes terribly wrong in the outdoors. Someone gets lost. The weather changes drastically. Someone gets sick or takes a fall.
And someone dies
It's particularly unfortunate when bad things are preventable.
At Hiking the Ozarks, we aim to ensure the preventable things don't happen. We aim to make you your own master of the outdoors so you know what to do when things outside your control take over.
take control
But ensuring preventable things don't happen takes skill. And you need to practice those skills in a real life environment that isn't easy ...
Know How to Master The Outdoors Better Than You Thought Possible.
forget fear. take action.
Practicing your skills in a real-life setting that mimics the hard reality of a survival situation is how you learn ...

you asked
We answered ...
Are there any refunds, or can I pay for a portion of the class?
There are no refunds and, while you can choose to attend all or a portion of the weekend class, the fee is a one-time flat fee. Class size is limited to 30 to ensure everyone has the best possible experience. If you register and cannot attend class for any reason, YOU WILL NOT BE GRANTED A REFUND. But we will miss you. You can register at the event if there is space, but the fee will be $75 per person (or higher).
Is there a discount for families or children?
No, unfortunately there is no special pricing for children or families. The cost is per person. Children and youth of many ages have attended the class and have had a wonderful time. We suggest, however, that you are the best judge of whether your child will find the classroom and practical instructions useful.
can i send my child under 17?
ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 17 MUST BE SUPERVISED BY THEIR PARENT OR GUARDIAN FOR THE FULL COURSE OF THE ADVANCED SURVIVAL SCHOOL. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS. But otherwise children are most welcome assuming you judge the experience suitable to them. Just as all attendees will need to do, children will also be required to sign a waiver along with their parent or guardian.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring your survival kit, 1 liter of water, a bar of your choice, and all the clothes you desire in your backpack. You may also bring along work gloves, a few garbage bags, survival blankets and a metal pot; you will find these items beneficial to help execute your skills. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at the email address found in your welcome email.
DO YOU PROVIDE LUNCH?
No. We are mimicking a survival situation - so you should not bring lunch or snacks, other than your 1 candy bar which should be used for bait and 1 liter of water. You we be allowed to gather more water, locate and consume wild edibles and catch or harvest other animals to eat if you desire. Instructors will be there to help and educate for your safety when it comes to wild edibles and fishing and hunting.
DOES THE EVENT GO ON IN THE RAIN OR COLD?
We do not cancel the event for weather conditions, OTHER THAN if we, in our sole discretion, deem it unsafe for people to attend the class in extreme weather. In that event, all registered students will receive a full and prompt refund. Please note that cold or rainy weather is in fact an excellent circumstance in which to practice the skills you will be learning. We believe in you!
WHERE IS THE CLASS HELD?
This class will be held on private land in Stone County, Missouri. We will meet at the Walmart parking lot in Branson West (18401 MO-13) at 8 am Central on March 21, 2020. We will leave promptly at 8:15 am so please do not be late. At that time, we will carpool to our destination which is a 15-20 minute drive away. We may spend additional time on Sunday morning executing skills but most students are ready to call it a weekend by 9 am, when breakfast and a hot shower are calling!
